| Site Description: |
Originally designed and constructed around 1925 as a private estate, the property was eventually purchased by the Archdiocese of Detroit for use as a retreat.
In the mid-1960s, Dr. David P. Weikart, the late founder and president of the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation acquired the property and over the past 40-plus years continued to make numerous improvements and upgrades to its buildings and grounds.
In 2000, the property was gifted by the Weikart family to the High/Scope Foundation, and until August 2009 the RMC was used continuously for the Foundation's Teacher-Training programs, International Youth Leadership Camp, and Dr. Phyllis Weikart's renowned Music, Movement, and Dance programs. |

For evening activities there is a fire pit that can accommodate a large group for storytelling, singing, and roasting marshmallows.

| Interior Description: |
The RMC facility features two main buildings, the BRICK HOUSE and STUCCO HOUSE, both named for their exterior materials. The two houses were designed by a well-known Detroit architect, Nathan Gould.
The Brick House is located on the south side of Iron Creek. The interior is approximately 8,200 square feet and features two large meeting areas with stone fireplaces and nine dormitory-style rooms. The dormitories, which can sleep a total of 42 people, have built-in beds, each with its own storage space and reading lamp. There are five shared baths available for guests.
The Brick House also features a fully equipped commercial kitchen and a 90-seat dining hall that enables on-site meal preparation and serving. At mealtimes, guests can enjoy a relaxing view over the lookout deck.
The Stucco House is located on the north side of Iron Creek. It has approximately 7,600 square feet of interior space, including two large meeting areas with fireplaces and 11 dormitory-style rooms that can provide sleeping space for 41 guests. Like the Brick House, it has built-in beds and five shared baths. If you look closely, you'll notice that it mirrors the Brick House, except that it lacks a commercial kitchen and dining hall.
The lower level of the Stucco House also includes a two-bedroom (Manager's) apartment with private entrance.
The ANNEX Building located next to the Stucco House is a converted Carriage House that offers auxiliary sleeping quarters and can accommodate up to 25 additional guests.
The third main building located on the campus is a 7,000-square-foot renovated BARN that features a hand-laid wooden suspended dance floor and stained glass windows. The barn serves as a venue for dancing, music, drama presentations, and large-group meetings.
It also includes an arts and crafts center, wood shop with storage, and extensive balcony and decking. |
